Salt and Light
"You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how
shall its saltness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to
be thrown out and trodden under foot by men. "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and
it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works
and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:13-16
The Law of the Prophets
"Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have
come not to abolish them but to fulfil them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota,
not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches
men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them
and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes
and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:17-20
Jesus Heals Many at Simon's House
And immediately he left the synagogue, and entered the house of Simon
and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon's mother-in-law lay sick with a fever, and immediately they
told him of her. And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever
left her; and she served them. That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or
possessed with demons. And the whole city was gathered together about the door. And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out
many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew
him.
Mark 1:29-34
Preaching Tour of Galilee
And in the morning, a great while before day, he rose and went out to a
lonely place, and there he prayed. And Simon and those who were with him pursued him, and they found him and said to him, "Every one is searching for you." And he said to them, "Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach
there also; for that is why I came out." And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and
casting out demons.
Mark 1:35-39
Jesus Calls the First Disciples
While the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he was
standing by the lake of Gennes'aret. And he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them
and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out
a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep
and let down your nets for a catch." And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at
your word I will let down the nets." And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as
their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them.
And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying,
"Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the catch of fish
which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zeb'edee, who were partners
with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; henceforth you will
be catching men." And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and
followed him.
