Lesson - Deuteronomy 8:1-3,6-10(17-20) |
A Warning Not to Forget God in Prosperity
1: "All the commandment which I command you this day you shall be careful to
do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the
LORD swore to give to your fathers.
2: And you shall remember all the way which the LORD your God has led you
these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you
to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments, or
not.
3: And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you
did not know, nor did your fathers know; that he might make you know that
man does not live by bread alone, but that man lives by everything that
proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD.
6: So you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, by walking in
his ways and by fearing him.
7: For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks
of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills,
8: a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a
land of olive trees and honey,
9: a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will
lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can
dig copper.
10: And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God for
the good land he has given you.
[17: Beware lest you say in your heart, 'My power and the might of my hand
have gotten me this wealth.'
18: You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power
to get wealth; that he may confirm his covenant which he swore to your
fathers, as at this day.
19: And if you forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve
them and worship them, I solemnly warn you this day that you shall surely
perish.
20: Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so shall you
perish, because you would not obey the voice of the LORD your God.] |

Epistle - James 1:17-18,21-27 |
Hearing and Doing the Word
17: Every good
endowment and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father
of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
21: Therefore put away all filthiness and rank growth of wickedness and
receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
22: But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
23: For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man
who observes his natural face in a mirror;
24: for he observes himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was
like.
25: But he who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and
perseveres, being no hearer that forgets but a doer that acts, he shall be
blessed in his doing.
26: If any one thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but
deceives his heart, this man's religion is vain.
27: Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this:
to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself
unstained from the world. |

Gospel - Matthew 6:25-33 |
Do Not Worry
25: "Therefore I tell
you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall
drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than
food, and the body more than clothing?
26: Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into
barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value
than they?
27: And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life?
28: And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the
field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin;
29: yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one
of these.
30: But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and
tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of
little faith?
31: Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall
we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'
32: For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows
that you need them all.
33: But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things
shall be yours as well. |
