Exodus 34:1-8
Moses Makes New Tablets
The LORD said to Moses, "Cut two tables of stone like the first; and I will
write upon the tables the words that were on the first tables, which you
broke. Be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai,
and present yourself there to me on the top of the mountain. No man shall
come up with you, and let no man be seen throughout all the mountain; let no
flocks or herds feed before that mountain." So Moses cut two tables of stone
like the first; and he rose early in the morning and went up on Mount Sinai,
as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand two tables of stone. And
the LORD descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the
name of the LORD. The LORD passed before him, and proclaimed, "The LORD, the
LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast
love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving
iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the
guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the
children's children, to the third and the fourth generation." And Moses made
haste to bow his head toward the earth, and worshiped. |

Epistle |
Romans 1:1-7
Salutation
Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the
gospel of God which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy
scriptures, the gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David
according to the flesh and designated Son of God in power according to the
Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,
through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the
obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, including
yourselves who are called to belong to Jesus Christ; To all God's beloved in
Rome, who are called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our
Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. |

Gospel |
Luke 2:15-21
When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one
another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened,
which the Lord has made known to us." And they went with haste, and found
Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they saw it they
made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child; and
all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary kept all
these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned,
glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been
told them.
Jesus is Named
And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus,
the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. |
