Closest to November 23 |
| Almighty and
everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in thy well beloved
Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples
of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together
under his most gracious rule; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. |

Jeremiah 23:1-6
Restoration After Exile
"Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!" says
the LORD. Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the
shepherds who care for my people: "You have scattered my flock, and have
driven them away, and you have not attended to them. Behold, I will attend
to you for your evil doings, says the LORD. Then I will gather the remnant
of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them, and I will
bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I
will set shepherds over them who will care for them, and they shall fear no
more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be missing, says the LORD. "Behold,
the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up for David a
righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall
execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be
saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will
be called: `The LORD is our righteousness.' |

Epistle |
Colossians 1:11-20
May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for
all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has
qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has
delivered us from the dominion of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom
of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
The Supremacy of Christ
He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of
all creation; for in him all things were created, in heaven and on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or
authorities -- all things were created through him and for him. He is before
all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body,
the church; he is the beginning, the first-born from the dead, that in
everything he might be pre-eminent. For in him all the fulness of God was
pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things,
whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. |

Luke 23:35-43
The Crucifixion of Jesus
And the people stood by, watching; but the rulers scoffed at him, saying,
"He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his
Chosen One!" The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him
vinegar, and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!" There
was also an inscription over him, "This is the King of the Jews." One of the
criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, "Are you not the Christ?
Save yourself and us!" But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear
God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed
justly; for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has
done nothing wrong." And he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into
your kingdom." And he said to him, "Truly, I say to you, today you will be
with me in Paradise."

Luke 19:29-38
Jesus' Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem
When he drew near to Beth'phage and Bethany, at the mount that is called
Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, saying, "Go into the village opposite,
where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet
sat; untie it and bring it here. If any one asks you, `Why are you untying
it?' you shall say this, `The Lord has need of it.'" So those who were sent
went away and found it as he had told them. And as they were untying the
colt, its owners said to them, "Why are you untying the colt?" And they
said, "The Lord has need of it." And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing
their garments on the colt they set Jesus upon it. And as he rode along,
they spread their garments on the road. As he was now drawing near, at the
descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began
to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that
they had seen, saying, "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the
Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!" |
